I recently delivered an induction programme for learners about to start the NVQ in learning & development. One of the things we covered was use of prior achievement and learning - APL. many of the group were holders of D32/33 (assessor award) and D34 (Internal verifier award) and were suprised to discover that they were not able to apl these units onto the learning & development NVQ.
They were extremely "put-out"! After all they were accredited assessors and/or verifiers and some of the optional units on the learning & development NVQ were the A1 (assessor award) and V1 (Internal verifier award). Why couldn't they apl?
Well the reason is, the new assessor and verifier awards are markedly different than the old ones - particularly in terms of the requirement for knowledge base around quality assurance. Whilst in practice they could partly apl the D units, there were huge gaps and the learners would still have to undertake the A1 and V1 as optional choices.
It does seem a little bizarre as there was no requirement for holders of the D units to undertake the new awards - just ensure they had familiarised themselves with the new standards and were able to apply them in practice.
Unsuprisingly, none of the learners in this particualr co-hort elected to do either the A1 or V1 as optional choices - bit of a feeling of "done that, got the t-shirt and it still fits!"
